Chris Gray

The portfolio musician

Chris splits his time between his roles as Director of Scottish Opera’s Connect Company and Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Aberdeen. 

Throughout his career Chris has sought to work on a long-term basis with youth and amateur choirs, orchestras and opera companies to carefully scaffold the training required to produce consistently high quality, professional performances and productions.

Chris has led Youth Choir and Orchestra Tours to Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Holland and Spain has given numerous World, UK and Scottish premier performances, worked with young and established international artists including Dame Emma Kirkby, James Gourlay, Judith Howarth, Ruth Palmer, Andy McTaggart and John Wallace and recorded for Classic FM.

Chris teaches conducting at the University of Aberdeen at an introductory level as part of the BMus (Hons) programmes and at an advanced level within the MMus (Vocal Music) programme.

Conducting Commitments

Throughout his career Chris has sought to work on a long-term basis with youth and amateur choirs, orchestras and opera companies to carefully scaffold the training required to produce consistently high quality, professional performances and productions. Chris has led Youth Choir and Orchestra Tours to Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Holland and Spain has given numerous World, UK and Scottish premier performances, worked with young and established international artists including Dame Emma Kirkby, James Gourlay, Judith Howarth, Ruth Palmer, Andy McTaggart and John Wallace and recorded for Classic FM. 

Chris has served as Musical/Artistic Director to the following: Kelvin Ensemble (2014 - 2016),  Scottish Opera Connect Company (2008 - present), University of Aberdeen Choral Society, Marischal Chamber Orchestra and Choral Society (2011 - present).

He maintained long term relationships with the following regional youth orchestras in Scotland: Aberdeenshire, Bearsden and Milngavie Youth Orchestra (BMYO), Dumfries and Galloway, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Orkney (Sanday), Stirling, West Lothian, Western Isles.

Chris has also performed with: Bon Accord Silver Band, Caledonian Voices, Glasgow Orchestral Society, Northern Voices, University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir and Chamber Choirs, University of Glasgow Choral Society,
